Mrs. Elizabeth (Betty) Fredenburg Salo

Elizabeth (Betty) Fredenburg Salo died peacefully in her home on March 22, 2017 with her family by her side. Elizabeth was born in Bennington, Vermont on March 28, 1914, the daughter of James and Alexina Mieklejohn Donald, both from Scotland. Elizabeth was very proud of her Scottish heritage and her favorite part of any Fourth of July parade was hearing her beloved bagpipes. She graduated from Pittsfield schools and obtained her nursing degree in 1937 from Boston City Hospital School of Nursing, graduating with the distinction of being the only student in her class who never missed a day. She was employed at Pittsfield General Hospital from 1954 -1967 and by Dr. George Porter for two years until she began working for pediatrician Dr. Frances Harrington where she remained until her retirement in 1989. Elizabeth married Earl C. Fredenburg on February 16th, 1938. After his death in 1975 she was married to William Arnold Salo in 1982 until his death in 1984. She was a member of Morningside Baptist Church where she played the piano for Sunday school, sang in the choir and was a member of the Board of Trustees, Rachel Circle and the Women's League. Elizabeth loved music and played the piano beautifully. She also loved baking and was well-known for her pie crust and her shortbread cookies. She was an avid reader and enjoyed bowling, going to the Farmers Market, playing Yahtzee and taking walks. She loved animals and had a special fondness for cats and foxes. The most important thing in Elizabeth's life was her family. She loved sharing time with her son and grandchildren and was their biggest fan; attending all their sporting events, recitals and theater productions. Christmas was her favorite holiday with her entire family around her. She was always interested in all family goings-on and was a constant source of encouragement, support and unconditional love. She will be loved and missed always. She is survived by her son Donald Fredenburg and his wife Elizabeth (Betty); grandchildren Deborah Wojtaszek (Jim), Paula Ward (James), James Fredenburg (Marcie) and Jonathan Marra (Vernetta); great-grandchildren Christopher and Rachael Ward, Aaron and Michael Wojtaszek, Dillan, Alisa and Anthony Marra and Ethan and Hailey Fredenburg; many niece and nephews and her former daughter-in-law Janice Fredenburg. Elizabeth was predeceased by her husbands Earl C. Fredenburg and William Arnold Salo, her brothers Chester, David. George and William and a grandson Scott Fredenburg. The family wishes to thank Hospice for their compassionate care of Elizabeth, especially her nurse Tracie and aides Linda and Lori. FUNERAL NOTICE- Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth F. Salo will be held Monday, March 27, 2017 at 11AM at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield with Rev. Stephen Buchauer, officiating. Burial will follow in the Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Sunday, March 26 from 2-5PM at the funeral home.
