Mrs. Ethel H. Hanson

Ethel H. Hanson 96, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2014 at Mount Carmel Care Center following a brief illness. Born Feb. 11, 1918 in Pittsfield, Ma. she was the daughter of Mortimer H. Chapman and Ruth L. Salmon Chapman. After attending a one-room schoolhouse in Richmond, she graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1936. She lived and worked on the family farm in until 1940 when she married E. Clarence Hanson and moved to the home they built together on Summit Rd. in Richmond. Besides being a homemaker while raising three sons, she did volunteer work at the Richmond School, Boy Scouts and numerous charities. She was a founding member of the Berkshire Community Church where she donated her time to help families in need and teaching. She was honored with an award, “The 2000 Award”, from the Council of Churches for 60 years of teaching Sunday school. In her later years she worked as home care giver and nanny. She was a fantastic cook and was famous for her award winning apple pies. She loved sitting around with family and friends and telling stories, but it was the quiet visits with grandchildren that brought her the most joy. Hearing about their daily lives and adventures made her increasingly proud of each one. Ethel is survived by her two sons, John and Mary Hanson, Ray and Christine Hanson of Richmond, and Challis Hanson the wife of her deceased son Richard; seven grandchildren, Joseph Hanson, John Hanson, Julie Hanson Griffin, Jill Hanson Hinckley, Clifford Hanson, Dana Hanson and Ashley Hanson Paulson; eight great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Ethel is predeceased by her husband Clarence, eldest son Richard, a sister Helen, brothers, Clifford, Malcolm, Ernest, William, Russell, and Roger. FUNERAL NOTICE- Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel H. Hanson will be held Monday, Nov. 17, 2014 at 11AM at the Berkshire Community Church, Cemetery Rd., Richmond, with Rev. Roberta Health, officiating. Burial will follow in the Center Cemetery in Richmond, MA. Calling hours will be Sunday, Nov 16, from 4-7PM at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME.
