Mrs. Margaret C. Barnes

HINSDALE- Margaret C. Barnes, 95, died January 26 at home with her family, having lived a life of courage, grace and humor. She was born February 14, 1922 in Easthampton, MA, daughter of Burt and Katherine Crocker. She graduated from Green Mountain College and went to work at GE. There she met her closest friend, Betty Dam, who introduced her to her future husband, Roy Barnes. They courted by mail while he was posted overseas during WW II and married in 1946. Peg worked as a secretary at Kittredge School in Hinsdale from 1967 – 1989, a wonderful fit because she loved children. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church. Peg enjoyed tending her flower garden, reading, and spending time with family. She loved animals, especially cats. She and her husband Roy and their three daughters enjoyed outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing and camping and camped their way across the country twice. They especially enjoyed square dancing. A highlight of her later years was a trip to Alaska with her sister Kay and her sister-in-law, Marion. Peg was a wonderful mother and friend to many, always putting others before herself and inspiring two friends of her daughters to informally adopt her as their mother. She was also closely involved in the raising of her grandsons Nick and Marc Stucklen. Peg was predeceased by her husband Roy C. Barnes Jr. She leaves daughters Pamela Peters (Ken) of Westfield, MA, Melissa Barnes (David) of Olympia, WA, and Dorothy Stucklen of Hinsdale, MA, grandchildren Gabriella Michaliszyn, Sam Peters, Amanda Craven, Doug Peters, Nick Stucklen, Marc Stucklen and six great grandchildren. Peg’s family is grateful for the caregivers who assisted her in her final years, including Cindy Conry, Marcia Middleton, Kathy Walton and Cathy Adams. FUNERAL NOTICE- A memorial service for Peg will be held Saturday, February 3 at 11 AM at the First Congregational Church of Hinsdale. Calling hours will precede the service starting at 10 AM.
