Mr. Wayne L. Miller

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Wayne L. Miller, 94, of Dalton Massachusetts on June 26, 2016 at Berkshire Medical Center. Wayne was born August 25,1921, in Craigsville, Virginia with his identical twin, Wayland P. Miller. He is the son of Harry D. and Margaret E. (Clements) Miller of Craigsville, Virginia. He married Virginia K. Pulver of Chatham, New York in January of 1956 - this year celebrating 60 years of marriage. Wayne attended his hometown public schools and graduated from Craigsville High School in 1940. At the start of World War II he enlisted shortly thereafter into the Army Air Corps/ United States Air Force as a military career. During his military service he attended the University of Maryland and University of Illinois. His 24-year military career included many years at the Pentagon in Washington D.C., the Asiatic Pacific, Japan, and numerous stateside bases. He received many commendation medals and the Bronze Star. He was a long time member of the American Legion Upon military retirement with his wife and children, he relocated from Monterey, California to Dalton, Massachusetts for the next 50 years to make his home. In the Berkshires, Wayne began a second career at Crane and Company and Berkshire Community College, retiring again in December of 1986. Wayne was a 25-year member of the Dalton Lions Club. During that time, he served as secretary, vice president, president, and also participated in many fund raising projects for the blind. He found the Lions Club volunteer activities very near and dear to his heart. As a fifty-year member of the First Congregational Church of Dalton, he held many positions, Stewardship Committee, Friendly Visitors, Called to Care group and participation in many other committees and groups there. In addition, he served as a Deacon of the church. Following his retirement, he enjoyed many interests such as watching his family grow with numerous grandchildren and great - grandchildren, reading, listening to classical music, theatre, enjoying neighbors and friends, traveling with his wife and volunteer activities. He will be missed for his sense of humor, generosity, warm smile, and all he contributed to his community. Wayne is predeceased by his parents, and brothers, Richard, Harry, Wayland, Fred, Russell and Ray as well as his loyal and beloved Dalmatian dog "Missy". Besides his wife, Virginia, he leaves behind three children, Kara Weiss and husband Richard of Philadelphia, Pa., Wayne D. Miller and wife Judy (Miller) of Suffolk, Va., Kendra Tarlton and husband Edward of Middletown, Rhode Island, his sister June Southers (Roy) of Buena Vista, Va. Surviving family also include grandchildren- Candice, Elizabeth, Brady, Erin, James, Jill, Bennett, Spencer, Michelle, and great grandsons -Cameron, Dominick, and Joshua, and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank BMC Hospital for the kind, heartfelt, compassionate care he received during his stay there. FUNERAL NOTICE - A memorial service to celebrate Wayne’s life is planned for July 23rd, 2016 at 11:30AM at the First Congregational Church, Dalton, Massachusetts, with Rev. Quentin Chin, pastor, officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations in his memory may be made to the Dalton Ambulance Fund or the First Congregational Church of Dalton in care of the Bartlett Wellington Funeral Home, 525 Main St. Dalton, Ma. 01226.
