Mr. William J. McNutt

William J McNutt, Electrical Engineer Pittsfield, MA William J McNutt, 87, of Pittsfield, died, Friday November 14 at Berkshire Place. Bill was born in Philadelphia, PA on August 31, 1927. He was the son of Thomas and Mary V. McNutt. He graduated from high school at Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia in 1945. He received a BSEE degree from Tufts College, Medford, MA in 1950 and an MSEE degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1952. He served in the Navy from 1945 to 1946. Bill was employed by the General Electric Co, Large Power Transformer Dept. from 1952 through 1986. From 1987 to 1995 he conducted a technical consulting business serving an international clientele. His contributions to the electric power industry were recognized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) through four prize paper awards, two transformers committee distinguished service awards, elevation to the grade of Life Fellow, and the Charles P. Steinmetz Award for lifetime contributions in the area of power transformer standards. Internationally, he served as the U. S. representative to the CIGRE Transformers committee in Paris for 11 years. In August, 1950, he married Eleanor M. McGonigal of Wyncote, PA. In February 1952, they moved to Pittsfield and resided there since that time. He has been a member of the South Congregational Church since 1952, serving at various times as Superintendent of the church school, Deacon, Trustee, and the Treasurer. His recreational interests included square dancing, gardening, duplicate bridge, golf, and tennis. He became a life master of duplicate bridge. Over his lifetime Bill donated over five gallons of blood. He recorded for the blind for four hundred and forty hours. He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor who passed away April 20, 2012. Bill is survived by his four children: Caryl Gilman (Casco, ME), Anne Fatal (Burlington, MA), Judy McNutt (Pittsfield) and Andrew McNutt (Boulder, CO). His extended family includes five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE- A memorial service for William “Bill” McNutt will be held at South Congregational Church on Saturday, November 22 at 1pm, with Rev. Joel H. Huntington pastor, officiating. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be at the West Laurel Hill Cemetery in Bala Cynwyd, PA.
