Mr. Alberico "Bill" DiNicola

Mr. Alberico “Bill” DiNicola, 89, of West St., Pittsfield, passed away on Thanksgiving, November 24, 2016, surrounded by his family at the home of his son, Billy. Born on September 14, 1927, the son of Tomasso and Maria Biagini DiNicola, he was a 1945 graduate of St. Joseph High School. A three-sport athlete at St. Joe, Bill was once called “the diminutive spark plug” in a newspaper write-up for his electrifying basketball performance. In fact, Bill’s image, in a basketball uniform, was chosen to be part of the multi-sport mural that adorns the Pittsfield Boys Club today. Mr. DiNicola was a WWII veteran serving in the US Navy. He worked as a Compositor for the Berkshire Eagle for 43 years, retiring in 1991. His three sons fondly referred to him as “Gadabout” after the pioneering television fisherman. No matter the location or circumstances, Bill always found a way to catch a nice trout, even when no one else got a bite. Bill was long time coach of youth sports, enjoyed golf and was a stalwart member of the Pittsfield GEAA "Roto Rooter" league. He had a passion for college basketball and was the creator and Commissioner of the DiNicola Final Four. Bill loved the arts and was an avid reader. He enjoyed traveling to Italy, Cape Cod and anywhere his children or grandchildren took him. He became quite the painter late in his life -- several of his works are proudly displayed in his family's homes. Bill was the life of the party, often singing into the wee hours, and then playing Camelot on the stereo the next morning while cooking breakfast for everyone. Nothing made Bill more proud or brought more fulfillment than watching the achievements of his grandchildren -- be it sporting events, graduations, or job promotions. Mr. DiNicola was predeceased by his wife, the former Christine E. “Teeny” Volin , whom he married on October 8, 1949 in St. Mark’s Church. She passed away on November 17, 2011. He is survived by his 5 children, Patty Douillet and her husband Roger of Pittsfield, Billy DiNicola and his wife Lisa of Dalton, Jeff DiNicola of Huntersville, NC, Peter DiNicola, Captain USCG (RET) and his wife Phyllis of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Beth Couturier and her husband Russ of Worcester, MA; 9 grandchildren, Nicole (Liana) and William Douillet, LeiAnna O’Laughlin, Casey, Chrissy, Lauren and Cathie DiNicola and Megan (Rob) and Jack Brunell and a great grandson, Cruz. He was predeceased by two brothers, Angelo DiNicola and Thomas DiNicola and a sister, Amelia Bordeau. Funeral Notice: Funeral services for Mr. Alberico “Bill” DiNicola will be Monday, November 28, 2016 at 10 a.m. from the Dwyer Funeral Home, 776 North St., Pittsfield MA with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Church, celebrated by the Rev. A. Peter Gregory, pastor. Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Sunday, November 27, 2016, from 2 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to Little Smiles (a charity benefiting terminally ill children in Charlotte, NC), or to Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, attention Charleston, SC Program (a charity that assists disabled Veterans) care of the Dwyer Funeral Home, in his memory.
