Mr. Donald V. Andrews

Mr. Donald V. Andrews, 98, of Pittsfield, passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. Born in Pittsfield, MA, on October 21, 1924, the son of the late Harold and Susie Shipton Andrews, he graduated from Pittsfield High School with the class of 1943. Don was a World War II Veteran. He enlisted in the United States Army in June of 1943, where he proudly served his country in the European conflict and at the battle of Remagen Bridge. He served as an Automatic Weapons Crewman, as well as a Supply Clerk until 1946. After his time in the military, Don was employed by Brewer Brothers where he met his wife, Shirley. He was then employed by Haddad Motors, where alongside his wife, he dedicated 44 years as Service Manager until his retirement in 1987. Don’s job was a perfect fit for him, as he loved cars and was always known for maintaining his with a good wash and wax! Among many things, he enjoyed reading, photography, woodworking and EATING, especially “nana’s mac and cheese”. He was an active participant in society and was a member of the Lenox Sportsman Club, the Berkshire Pioneer Square Dancing Club, and the South Congregational Church of Pittsfield. Don’s family was always his top priority. He never turned down the opportunity to spend time with them, especially his grand (and great) grandchildren. Don is survived by his beloved wife of 74 years, the former Shirley Dartt, whom he married at Morningside Baptist Church on October 2, 1948. He leaves behind his children, Donna L. Herzig and Greg R. Andrews, as well as his grandchildren, Jennifer Heck (Robert), Jaime Adorno, Brad Abrams, Amanda Herzig, Heather Herzig, Melanie Herzig, and Donald Andrews II. Donald was also blessed with his great grandchildren, Gustavo Adorno, DeLisia Adorno, David Lemaire, Madison McIntosh, Kendall Heck, Ashley Heck, Ambrees Herzig, Brandon Abrams and Dillon Abrams, as well as his sister, Joan Benjamin and many nieces and nephews. Additionally, Donald is survived by his Native American friends with whom he and Shirley shared fellowship at many gatherings. Don was predeceased by his daughter, Susie Speranzo, as well as his sisters, Marion Longstreeth and Caroline Tarbell, and granddaughter Ashley Andrews. A special thank you to Mike, Cindy and Debbie at the Berkshire Visiting Nurses and all the staff at Mt. Greylock Extended Care for their loving care. Funeral Notice: A celebration of life for Mr. Donald V. Andrews will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Strong Little Souls, a local children charity, in care of the Dwyer-Wellington Funeral Home, 220 East Street, Pittsfield MA 01201.
