Mrs. Doris Rote Shutts

Doris Rote Shutts passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at the Hillcrest Commons Nursing Home. She was 4 days shy of her 95th birthday. Doris was born on August 31, 1927, the daughter of Paul and Madeline Rote. She attended Pittsfield High School, graduating in 1945. In January of 1946, she married John Harder Shutts from Martindale, NY. They soon moved back to Doris’s childhood home, where she would live for the next 67 years. After raising her three children, John, Bruce and Cheryl, she returned to work as a baker in the Pittsfield public school system. During her life she acquired many domestic skills. Her cake decorating produced many elaborate wedding and birthday cakes. Many people benefited from the beautiful quilts she created, but her favorite hobby was knitting. She knitted newborn caps for the Berkshire Medical center, and her signature baby sweaters are still being worn by her great grandchildren. Throughout her life she was actively involved at Zion’s Lutheran Church in Pittsfield holding several volunteer positions. She was affectionately called “Dodo” at an early age by her nieces and the name stuck for the rest of her life. Dodo was one of the sweetest ladies, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She always saw the good in people and everyone who knew her, loved her. She is survived by her two sons, John H Shutts Jr. of Pittsfield and Bruce Shutts (and wife Linda) of Plymouth MA. She is also survived by her four grandchildren; Megan Shutts Mitz, Amanda Robertson, Jeffrey Shutts and Ryan Lisenko, her five great grandchildren; Conor, Elliott, Sadie, Camden and Teddy, her son-in law Robert Lisenko, her sister-in-law Pamela Rote, several nieces and their families. She was predeceased by her husband John, her daughter Cheryl Lisenko, sister Eileen Provost and brother Paul Rote Jr. Funeral Notice: Funeral services for Doris Rote Shutts will be Thursday, September 1, 2022, at 2 pm at the Dwyer-Wellington Funeral Home, 220 East Street, Pittsfield MA 01201. Burial will follow at Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be prior to the service, from 12 noon to 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Doris’s memory can be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, 877 South Street, Ste 1W, Pittsfield MA 01201.
