Mr. Harry E. Hume

DALTON- It is with great sadness that the family of Harry E. Hume, 67, of Carson Ave. announces his passing at home, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on March 12, 1951 in Pittsfield, MA the son of Edgar and Lois Warren Hume; a 1969 graduate of Wahconah High School where he lettered and was captain of soccer, baseball and basketball. He spent the summer of 1969, touring Europe with a position on a traveling soccer team. He excelled in every sport he participated in and continued playing basketball, baseball and softball into his adult years. He also served as an umpire for baseball and softball including his daughters’ leagues. After serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, he attended Berkshire Community College. Harry worked at Crane & Company as a paper maker in the various mills until his retirement in 2016. Harry was an avid gardener both at home and at Wahconah Country Club where he golfed frequently, competed in tournaments and served on the Board of Directors. He also enjoyed watching and following horse racing, caring for his saltwater fish tank, and watching all sports. For over 25 years, Harry volunteered to serve as Santa Claus for the Dalton CRA, visiting families in Dalton on Christmas Eve. Harry and Karen traveled frequently, driving non-stop from Maine to Florida to watch his nephews and grandsons compete in sports, visit family, casinos or take their daughters and grandsons on vacations. Harry also spent summers at his family cabin on Ashmere Lake in Hinsdale boating, skiing and enjoying the peace and quiet with family and friends. He is survived by his wife the former Karen A. Lamoureux, whom he married October 11, 1980, daughters Alison Braxton (Brian) of Hillsborough, NC, Jessica Hume of Pittsfield, MA, Elizabeth Hume Phillips of Dalton, MA, grandsons Bailey, Carson, Aiden, Peyton, sister Edna Crowley (John) of Cape Coral, FL and brother Dale Hume (Melody) of Las Vegas, NV and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and longtime friends. He was predeceased by his sister Ellen Anderson. “For none could live in Dalton where he lived, and blessed all with his big, fine heart and generous soul, And not claim friendship”. FUNERAL NOTICE- A funeral service for Harry E. Hume will be held Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Noon at St. Agnes Catholic Church with Rev. Christopher Malatesta officiating. Burial will follow in the Main Street Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, 4-7PM at BARTLETT WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME in Dalton.
