Mr. James J. Popalis

Mr. James J. Popalis, 68, of East Chatham, NY passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at St. Peters Hospital in Albany, NY. After a long bout with an aggressive illness. Born in Tampa, FL on February 6, 1947, he was the son of Albert J. and Marion Sitton Popalis. James was surrounded by his loving family when he passed. After his drafted term of service in the Air Force, he completed his Bachelors of Arts degree at Pratt University in New York. Mr. Popalis was in the US Air Force as an Airman 1st Class towards the end of the Vietnam Conflict, and was honorably discharged in 1972. He later returned to the military, serving in the United States Army from 1981 until his retirement as a Staff Sergeant in July of 1995. James became a New York State Corrections Officer after his dedicated career in the U.S. Army, and transferred from there to work with the New York State Troopers. Before he passed away he was posted at the New York State Capital in Albany. He was an accomplished artist as well as a skilled photographer. James created many photorealistic still-life acrylic paintings. He also enjoyed target shooting with his sons. James most cherished his time he spent with his family. James leaves his wife of 36 years, Jeanine Gonia-Popalis. He is also survived by his three children and their families, Tiffany Popalis-Davenport, and Ryan Popalis and Kyle Popalis; His son in law, James Davenport and daughter in law Danielle Popalis; 5 grandchildren, Cameron Davenport, Gabriel, Landon, Jaxon, and Lance Popalis; His brother, Albert J. Popalis and wife Carol and their son, Albert S. Popalis. He also leaves his beloved dogs, Sadie, Bookie and Hero. Words could never describe how much love he had for family, friends, and pets or how much he was cherished in return. Funeral Notice: Funeral services for Mr. James J. Popalis will be Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 12 noon at the Dwyer Funeral Home with the Msgr. Michael Shershanovich, pastor of St. Josephs Church, officiating. Mr. Popalis’ wishes were to be cremated and his ashes will be received by immediate family. An hour of visitation at the funeral home will precede the service on Saturday from 11 a.m. until 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to “Thoracic Oncology Research Laboratory”, Harvey I. Pass, Director, in care of the Dwyer Funeral Home, 776 North St., Pittsfield MA 01201, in his memory.
