Kathryn "Kathy" Sanders

Kathryn “Kathy” Stevens (Keyes) Sanders, 85, of South Street, Dalton passed away at home on February 21, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. Kathryn was born on June 24, 1937 in Pittsfield, MA the daughter of the late Edwin Lincoln Keyes and Katherine Tufts Keyes. Kathryn was a graduate of Pittsfield High and grew up living and working at Unkamet Farm on Crane Avenue in Pittsfield. Early in life, she worked at Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams and Mountain Machine Co. in Peru. After marrying Robert and moving to Dalton, she worked for 20 years in the Wahconah High School cafeteria, retiring in June 2007. For many years she worked for the Dalton Board of Registrars, registering voters, working polls, and conducting the census. She was a lifetime member of the Hillside Agricultural Society. Kathy’s greatest joy was taking care of her boys, whether her own, her grandsons, neighbors or friends. She was a natural caregiver, caring for several elderly family and friends throughout her life. She was a den mother for 15 years and a proud mom of her three Eagle Scouts. Kathy enjoyed being outdoors and was particular about the upkeep of her lawn and yard. Always a hard worker, she often assisted her husband with masonry jobs and other projects such as building their home. Kathryn leaves her two sons, Edward A. Phelps and his companion, Verlene Kiesow, of Ada, MI and Arthur M. Sanders and his wife, Katherine, of Dalton. She leaves four grandchildren, Joshua H. Phelps and his wife Nicole of Newago, MI, Rachel M. Phelps of Lexington, Kentucky, Fritz T. Sanders and Beau M. Sanders of Dalton, one great grandson, Harley A. Phelps, and a brother, Delmont T. Keyes of Nunica, MI. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of nearly 48 years, Robert A. Sanders whom she married on August 23, 1969. She was also predeceased by her son, Robert H. Phelps, a granddaughter, Jessica L. Phelps, sisters, Barbara Jane Demers and Linda-Kay Mobley, and a brother, Clyde M. Keyes. The family would like to extend special thanks to HospiceCare in the Berkshires for their professional and compassionate care. Funeral Notice: Funeral services for Kathryn “Kathy” Sanders will be Friday, February 24, 2023, at 1pm at the Dwyer-Wellington Funeral Home in Dalton, 525 Main Street Dalton MA 01226. Burial will follow at Ashuelot Cemetery. There will be an hour of visitation at the funeral home prior to the service from 12noon to 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Kathy’s memory can be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, 877 South Street, Pittsfield MA 01201.
