Mr. Louis Addy

Louis Addy was born the beautiful day of August 23, 1947, in Accra, Ghana. Louis was the third of four children born to the late Emmanuel and Grace Quartey Addy. Louis had such a wonderful childhood, growing up in the company of his siblings, Cecelia Ameley Quaye, Beatrice and Listowel Addy. Louis attended Suhum senior high technical school for primary and middle school education and Suhum Secondary Technical School (SUTESCO) in Ghana where he graduated with a degree in Engineering. After graduating from technical school, he repaired TV’s and all types of electronics to make ends meet, until a time came when the king of Abola in Ghana passed away, he was supposed to be the next in line to succeed him because he came from a royal family. He didn’t want to be the next king so his mother Grace devised a plan for him to leave Ghana and funded his trip to relocate to the Ivory Coast to join his other families and be out of reach where he couldn’t be crowned the next king. There he worked a few odd jobs until he was employed by the U.S. Embassy in Ivory Coast where he worked as an Electrical Engineer and also with the Foreign Bureau Investigation Services (F.B.I.S.). It was there he dedicated over 25 years of his life until his retirement. Whilst working there, he came over to Ghana to visit his parents and his mother introduced him to the daughter of her best friend Emilia Mensah Waka, the daughter is Adelaide Ayorkor Ayetey, my mother whom he married and she changed her last name to Adelaide Ayorkor Addy, and later he also met Margaret Edu Gyamfi, together with Adelaide he had eight children among them, he adopted two more kids whom he raised as his own. He was a devoted and hard-working father and a loving husband. He loved to spend every time he could with his family, he loved all his children equally and raised them to love and cherish each other. Among many things, he liked listening to the songs of Bob Marley, Lucky Dube, Michael Jackson, etc, and tinkering with electronics during his spare time, he loved repairing all types of electrical devices for his friend, he enjoyed family time and being adventurous, traveling to many places with his family. Dad taught us many things over the years, how to fix broken electronics and be handy at home. But most importantly, he taught us how to be good men and women. It didn’t matter what it was, dad would always drop what he was doing if someone asked for his help. He was a great man, a loving husband, and a dedicated father. I think I speak for everyone here when I say we were lucky to know dad and he’ll be greatly missed by everyone he touched. After his retirement in Ivory Coast, he decided to bring all eight of his biological children to the United States to get better opportunities in life. He chose to be here in Pittsfield and after many years here watching his kids grow up to adulthood, he decided to go back to Ghana to enjoy the warm weather. There he was diagnosed with prostate cancer after living there for six years. He came back to the state to seek treatment and he was in the care of his wife Adelaide and children, he was a fighter who fought to live but prostate cancer proved to be too much and at the age of 75, he passed away at his home on Saturday, March 4, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Dad was a man of character, wise, compassionate, helpful, full of love, and had a heart of gold. He was a supporting brother, son, uncle, and friend who stood firm for everyone at all costs. As an uncle to his nieces and nephews, Louis sacrificed tremendously for them all. Dad, as most of his friends will attest, was openly pleasant to others and as a friend, he made you feel you were the only special friend he had. His sense of humor and a person drew people close to him. He was a loving person, giving his all to whomever, especially when they needed help. The greatest thing was that he was a man of faith. He loved and served God with all his heart. He shared the love of God in his actions and interactions. Dad was a rare gem because he had everyone's interest at heart before his. He was an overcomer because he testified of the goodness of God in his life. Dad left the world too soon as he had so much to give. Nonetheless, we are proud to say that he fought a good fight to cure his cancer. Dad, we miss you dearly, however, we know that you are in the good hands of your maker and reunited with your dearest loved ones. Rest until We Meet Again.
