Mr. Michael G. Miller

Michael G. Miller, 83, of Pittsfield, died on April 8 at Berkshire Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born on May 10, 1942, in the House of Mercy in Pittsfield, the third child of Lawrence K. and Amy Bess Williams Miller. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy MacMillin Miller; his children Lawrence K. Miller II of Brookline (Jennifer), and Emily M. Miller of Pittsfield; his grandchildren Ruby, Lawrence, and Charles; his sister Margo Miller of Boston, brother Mark C. Miller of Pittsfield (Osneyda); as well as four nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother Kelton B. Miller and sister-in-law Sheilah. Third-generation publisher of The Berkshire Eagle and CEO of Eagle Publishing Co. from the late 1970s to mid-1990s, Michael was a former reporter, printer, and advertising representative in Berkshire County, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, and New York. He headed the acquisition of the former Eaton, Crane & Pike building on South Church Street in Pittsfield, restoring it to National Historic Register standards and moving the Eagle’s operations from Eagle Street to the Clock Tower complex. He was educated in Pittsfield public schools through the 8th grade, Berkshire School, Lenox School for Boys, Boston University, and Columbia University. Stationed for a time in Panama, Michael was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, serving as Company Clerk and trained to parachute with his manual typewriter strapped to his chest. He was honorably discharged in 1964. He was a member of the Interlaken Volunteer Fire Department for 18 years and a founding member of H&H and The Romp. He taught himself to build dry stone walls, crafting several in Interlaken and Pittsfield. After studying cheesemaking in England, he made and marketed Berkshire Blue Cheese for nearly a decade. Michael enjoyed playing on the Eagle’s softball team and later traveled to see Major League baseball games throughout the country, aiming to visit old ballparks before they became decommissioned. He was skilled at snooker and shooting pool, once winning the straight pool championship at the New York Athletic Club. Michael read history widely and had a particular interest in first-hand accounts of World War I. A voracious reader of The New York Times, he loved spending his days with the crossword puzzle. Friends and family regularly received texts asking about clues related to popular culture. Funeral Notice: Funeral services will be private.
