Mrs. Phyllis Schultz Somerville

Phyllis Schultz Somerville, lifelong resident of Pittsfield, passed away on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, two months shy of her 86th birthday. Born in Pittsfield, MA, on June 21, 1939, daughter of the late Arthur and Ernestine Ouellette Menard, she graduated from St. Joseph’s High School with the class of 1957. She later attended several adult education courses at Berkshire Community College. Phyllis worked at the New England Telephone Company as a draftsman, leaving to raise a family. Once her children were grown, she found employment with the city of Pittsfield as the administrative assistant for the health department. It was from there that she retired, in 2005, after over 15 years of dedicated service. Phyllis was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. She participated in many community volunteer opportunities throughout her life. She was an avid fan of watching auto and horse racing and the Red Sox. Phyl also enjoyed playing cribbage and rummy-like games, as well as doing arts and crafts such as ceramics, painting, decoupage and knitting. She took pride in knitting gifts for her family or donating them to those in need. She recently found a passion for doing jigsaw puzzles and was known at her residence as the “Puzzle Lady”. However, her family and friends were more important than any of these hobbies. Grammy enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s numerous sporting events, concerts, plays and musicals, bringing her enthusiasm, love and support to each one. She was proud of the accomplishments of all of her children and grandchildren. She looked forward to each and every opportunity she had to spend time with her family and friends. She also loved her two goldies, Lady and Annie and enjoyed a good bowl of ice cream. She was always admired for her amazingly positive outlook on life. Phyllis was predeceased by her high school sweetheart, Paul Schultz. Phyllis and Paul were married from April 23, 1960 until his death in 1978. Her second husband, Robert Somerville, whom she married on May 4, 1991 died in 2004. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Charles (Richard) Menard and Robert Menard; and a sister, Sister Jeanne Menard, SSA. She is survived by her son, David Schultz of West Springfield; three daughters, Annemarie Fitzgerald and her husband Michael of Pittsfield, Nancy Schultz and her husband Mark Matys of Warren, and Kristin Gardner and her husband Bryan of Whitefish, Montana; five grandchildren, Kelsey, Owen, and Shayla Fitzgerald, Maria and Adrik Matys; two brothers, Norman Menard and his wife Claire of South Berwick, Maine and Denis Menard of Mesa, Arizona; and her “ Sister” Leona Serafino and her husband Patrick. Funeral Notice: Funeral services for Phyllis Schultz Somerville will be Tuesday, April 8, 2025, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11am at Sacred Heart Church, celebrated by the Rev. William Cyr. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Phyllis’ memory can be made to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue, or the charity of your choice.
