Mrs. Gladys M. Cande

DALTON Gladys M. Cande, 84, of Cleveland Rd., passed away peacefully on Wednesday. She was born on June 12, 1930 in Haverhill, the daughter of George and Ruth Walker Kimball. Gladys graduated from Haverhill High School in 1948, attended the Stockbridge School of Agriculture and received her diploma in 1950 and received her B.S in Animal Husbandry with a minor in Education from the University of Massachusetts in 1952. She worked as a 4-H extension agent in Lamoille County Vermont after graduation. She continued her association with 4-H for many years as a volunteer 4-H club leader. On May 8, 1954, she married former Stockbridge School classmate and lifetime Daltonian, John Cande who passed away Feb. 4, 1996. She accepted her first teaching assignment at the Crane Community School in Windsor teaching eight to ten students in fourth, fifth and sixth grade, a combined classroom. She continued her teaching career in Windsor until 1965, when she took a position at Dalton's Center School, teaching second grade and later third grade. She transferred to Craneville Elementary when Center School closed. She retired as a full time teacher in 1985, but continued as substitute teacher in the Central Berkshire Regional School District until 2001. During her time in Dalton she was very actively involved with many activities at Grace Episcopal Church. She volunteered with the Berkshire Talking Chronicle, and was a member of Eastern Star, Hilltop Grange, and the Dalton Current Topics Club. She is predeceased by her husband and her brother Leonard (Brud) Kimball. Gladys is survived by her daughter, Carol Cande of Dalton; son, Edward (Angelina) Cande of Bedford, N.H.; granddaughter, Laura Castellano (Marcos) of Peabody; granddaughter, Allyson Cande; sister, Eunice (Everett) Eaton of Marion; sisters-in-law, Mary Alice (Allen) Fox of Dublin, N.H., Sally (Glenn) Barber of Stratham, N.H., Judith Kimball of Milton, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Celebration of Life will be held Nov. 1, 2014 at noon at the Grace Episcopal Church in Dalton. Burial will private and at the convenience of the family.
