Harriet Masterman Hallas, 90, of Lee, MA and a longtime resident of Pittsfield, MA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 10, 2021. Born in Lawrence, MA on September 3, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Dorothy Masterman and grew up in Beverly, MA where she graduated from Beverly High School with the Class of 1948. Harriet married her husband, the late Kenneth B. Hallas, on April 20, 1968 and soon started a family which they raised in Pittsfield. After her husband passed away, she moved to Pineville, NC to enjoy warmer weather and to spend time with her grandchildren. Harriet worked most of her career in finance and accounting at the United Shoe Corp., WBZ Boston Radio Station, Friendly’s Ice Cream, and L.F. Gigliotti, Inc. Harriet was most proud of being a homemaker and a mother to her three children. She enjoyed being a Girl Scout leader for her daughters’ troops and took on the task of Area Cookie Coordinator for many years, filling up her house with hundreds of cases of Girl Scout cookies each year. Harriet was also an active member of South Congregational Church serving as Church Pledge Secretary for more the 20 years, volunteering endless hours with St. Joseph’s Soup Kitchen, was a member of the church Bell and Chancel Choirs, knit many of prayer shawls with the Yarn Spinners, and was a member of the May H. Mattoon Class and Ladies Benevolent Society. She rarely turned down a glass of wine, an opportunity to socialize, or a chance to beat someone at a game of cards. Harriet leaves her loving children Sheila H. Dunning and her husband Timothy and their daughter, Emerson Grace of Clinton, CT; David K. Hallas and his wife Kerri of Pittsfield and his stepchildren, Kaylee, Shawn and Luke, and Donna H. Nicosia and her husband Michael and their two sons, Riley and William, of Waxhaw, NC. She was predeceased by her brother, Charles Reed Masterman, who died as a young child. Funeral Notice: A memorial service celebrating the life of Harriet M. Hallas will be held at a later date when it is safe to gather again. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to South Congregational Church, 110 South Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201. Donations CANNOT be made online, but may be made through the Dwyer Funeral Home.
