Mr. Michael "Mike" Layden Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Michael “Mike” Layden of Churchill Street passed away unexpectedly, in the place he loved the most, his home, on June 25, 2022. Mike, a dedicated family man, was born to the late John and Theresa Amuso Layden in Pittsfield, MA on January 9, 1951. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Central School in 1970 and went on to work for over 40 years as a pressman at The Berkshire Eagle, retiring in 2014. Mike always felt that farming was not just a hobby but his true calling and he cherished the various wildlife that visited his home. He was an inventor and a problem solver–if it was broken Mike would find a way to fix it! He loved tinkering with motors, was a lifelong racing fan and enjoyed attending Saturday nights at Lebanon Valley. He also carried on a passionate love affair with Friendly’s Jim Dandies! Mike is survived by his fiance Alice Crosier of Pittsfield and four children; a son Michael Layden (Nicole) of Bethlehem PA, three daughters, Rachel Shepard (Jon) of Florida, Stephanie Layden (Matt) of Cheshire and Kimberly Simpson-Gomes (Rick) of Lanesborough. In addition to being a loving father Mike was also affectionately known as “Poppy” to his grandchildren, Shelby, Emily, Jennah, Kiersten, Lincoln and Xavier and to his great-grandchildren, Aubriella, Jasmine and Mason. Mike also leaves behind his siblings Dennis Layden(Mary) of Poinciana, Florida and Jean Martin(David) of Housatonic and many extended family members and friends. Mike will be remembered as a gentle soul who had an infectious smile and incredible wit. Though his passing leaves a huge hole in the hearts of those who loved him his gifts will outlast his lifetime and his legacy will live on in the hearts he’s touched. Funeral Notice: A memorial service for Michael “Mike” Layden will be Monday, August 1, 2022 at 11 am, outdoors at the Unity Terrace at the Dwyer-Wellington Funeral Home, 220 East Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mike’s memory can be made to the Future Farmers of America (FFA) at Mt. Everett Regional School, P.O. Box 219, 491 Berkshire School Road, Sheffield MA 01257.
