Mr. Alan "AJ" MacMillan

AJ MacMillan, 58, of Pittsfield, MA passed away suddenly on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, with family by his side. It’s not easy to sum up such a full life in such a short manner. Born in Pittsfield on May 8, 1966, AJ was the youngest of four. He found additional siblings in the other neighborhood kids, charming everyone he met with his easygoing nature. After graduating from Taconic High School, AJ began his career at General Electric as an electro-mechanical technician. His expertise led him to Lexicon, where he advanced from technician to manufacturing supervisor, continuing his work in electronics manufacturing. AJ next continued his career at StepTech, this time managing semiconductor test systems. A few years later, he applied his skills as owner of a hardware store. Throughout his career, he pursued his education, earning numerous certifications in electronics, management, and industrial wastewater treatment. AJ was not immune to hard times, however he overcame those challenges with an amazing support system, leading to stronger relationships. He was present for his parents and sister in their final days, caring for them during their individual health struggles. He was always willing to help, a dependable person when someone was in need, making those later years extra special for those he loved. AJ committed over 15 years working for the city of Pittsfield, raising to the role of Head Treatment Plant Operator for the Wastewater Facility. During his last couple months, he was finalizing his retirement and looking forward to move to southern Maine, near the seacoast his family had vacationed in his youth. After spending his twenties making wonderful, mischievous, and comical memories with his friends, AJ embraced fatherhood in his early thirties. He was incredibly proud of his daughters, taking them on adrenaline-filled vacations, sharing birth month celebrations, and enjoying lots of delicious food. He always showed up, loving to watch his girls build their dream lives. AJ was a skilled craftsman, taking pride in projects like building decks and restoring a 1976 Corvette Stingray. He also inherited his father’s green thumb, growing a vibrant and fruitful garden. Becoming a grandfather was one of AJ’s favorite life achievements, and his grandchildren got to experience his goofy personality, filling every visit with laughter and constant giggles. AJ was predeceased by his parents, Ellen Hickey MacMillan and Gavan MacMillan, and his sister, Gail MacMillan. He is survived by his brothers, Carl MacMillan of Canada and Thomas MacMillan of MA; his former wife and mother of his children, Joan MacMillan of NH; his daughters, Mary Ellen MacMillan in NY, and Audrey Lorusso and her husband, Brandon, of NH; and the Lorusso kids who made him a “Pop”, Carsen, Marcus, and baby number three on the way. He also leaves many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends as close as family. Funeral Notice: A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, February 21, 2025, at Our Lady of Miraculous Medal, 289 Lafayette Rd, Hampton, NH, beginning at 11:00 am. A private reception will follow. The family will host a private burial in Pittsfield in the spring.
