George J. Travers

George J. Travers Jr., of Norwalk, Ct, passed away on September 22, 2017 surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Pittsfield, MA on July 5, 1946, he left behind his devoted and loving wife, partner, and best friend for over 35 years, Cathy, as well as his loving family and many friends. He dearly loved his sisters Carol Hoyda, Leah Lewis, and his brother Michael Travers, as well as his brother in laws Serge Hoyda, David Lewis, and Jim and Chuck Pazzanesce. His much-adored nieces and nephews, Nelson Bordeaux, Leah Bordeaux, Stacey Vary, Michael Travers, Jordan Hoyda, and Lily Hoyda brought him so much joy and pride their whole lives, and his love and devotion to them was unconditional. Raised in Pittsfield, he was active in the Pittsfield Boys Club, and was a member of their Cavaliers Drum Corp. It was there that he learned woodworking skills and the passion for working with his hands. George loved to sketch and make things from wood. As a young teenager, he became an avid skier and continued to do so through most of his life. He was an avid follower of UConn College Basketball, women’s vs. men’s; he knew all the stats by heart. The Boston Red Sox and the N.E. Patriots made him crazy but he was crazy about them. He was an avid vintage car lover, especially his own. In the mid-70s, his career in retail management brought him to Connecticut. Over the years his work in retail and garment manufacturing led him to travel all over the world, which was something he loved to do. His last years were spent in sales until he retired in 2016. George was never defined by his work, but more by his character, ethics, and gentle compassionate soul. He could not tolerate cruelty or injustice of any kind to man or animal. He was never judgmental of anyone. He only ever sought peace and harmony in life. The loss of George will leave a hole in the heart of his loving wife, Cathy, and his many family members and numerous friends for years to come. He will be laid to rest close to his parents, George and Leah Travers, in Pittsfield Cemetery. Funeral Notice: Funeral services for Mr. George J. Travers will be Saturday, September 30, 2017, at 11:45 a.m. at the Dwyer Funeral Home, 776 North St., Pittsfield, MA, celebrated by Rev. William Furey. Calling hours at the funeral home will precede the service from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.. Burial will follow at Pittsfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pittsfield Boys and Girls Club, care of the Dwyer Funeral Home, as it was one of his favorite organizations to support. He felt so strongly about enabling children to go to summer camp who otherwise could not afford to.
