Mrs. Joanne M. Deutch

Joanne Marie Deutch (born Joanne Marie Dickstein), of Lenox, Massachusetts, passed away on July 8, 2026, just two days after celebrating her 76th birthday, with her devoted husband of fifty-five years, Carl Deutch, by her side. She is survived by the family who was the center of her world: her loving husband, Carl; her daughters, Gillian Solinsky (Dan Solinsky) and Silver Bohn (Craig Bohn); her cherished grandchildren, AJ and Jaidyn Solinsky; her brothers, Maurice Dickstein (Caren Gough) and Franklin Dickstein (Lea Dickstein); and her nephews, Ethan and Nathaniel Dickstein. Born on July 6, 1950, in Roslyn, New York, Joanne grew up in nearby Elmont. Even her childhood came with a touch of adventure. The family home had a hidden passage connecting two bedroom closets, and her brothers delighted in crawling through it just to jump out and scare their little sister—a story she never tired of telling. She met Carl through her oldest brother Maurice, who was Carl’s college friend. They married in 1971 and spent the next fifty-five years building a life side by side. Family and friends rarely thought of one without the other. Whether traveling, attending performances, enjoying time with family, or simply going about everyday life, where Joanne was, Carl usually wasn’t far behind. Their marriage was built not on grand gestures, but on quiet devotion, steadfast partnership, and always being there for one another. When Carl once suffered injuries to both arms in a basketball accident, Joanne cared for him without hesitation, doing everything he could not until he was back on his feet. It was simply who she was. Carl was also Joanne’s co-founder and partner in Gilly’s Hot Vanilla Gourmet Beverage Company. Joanne would watch Carl play softball on the weekends. They always watched all their favorite TV shows together. They would walk the dog together in town in Lenox, MA. And in Florida, they would go to farmers markets, buffets and the pool together. They were just always together. Dance was Joanne’s first great love. A lifelong dancer, she earned her bachelor’s degree from Adelphi University and a master’s degree in Dance Education from Columbia University, specializing in ballet. She danced professionally with the Eglevsky Ballet, had the privilege of performing alongside the legendary Maria Tallchief, and worked with acclaimed choreographer Rudy Perez. Teaching soon became just as meaningful as performing. Joanne owned and ran North Shore Dance School out of her own home before moving to Lenox, where she opened another dance school. She believed dance was about more than movement—it was about confidence, discipline, creativity, and joy. Those qualities shaped every chapter of her life. Joanne possessed a remarkable creative spirit and seemed to reinvent herself throughout her life, embracing each new chapter with enthusiasm. Over the years she was a professional dancer, dance teacher, entrepreneur, volunteer, jewelry maker, avid swimmer, baker, crafter, theater lover, HOA President, and tireless creator of beautiful things and meaningful memories. She worked for many years at Shakespeare & Company, where she handled advertising, group sales and renting the property for third-party special events. She volunteered as an usher at Jacob’s Pillow. She co-founded Gilly’s Hot Vanilla (where Gillian eagerly helped as a young girl, stuffing envelopes, mailing packages, and writing holiday cards to customers). Joanne also loved making jewelry, scrapbooks, crafts, and handmade gifts. Yet for all she accomplished, Joanne would likely say her proudest role was being a mother. As a mom, one of her core beliefs was that childhood should be filled with experiences that would stay with her daughters forever. If there was a gem and mineral show worth attending, there was a good chance Gillian and Silver would be joining her—even if it meant missing a day of school. When ancestry projects came home, she didn’t settle for library books; she drove her daughters to Ellis Island so history could become something they could see and touch. She volunteered to chaperone school trips whenever she could because she wanted to share those moments with them. Joanne valued education deeply, but she also believed some of life’s greatest lessons happened beyond the classroom. Curiosity, travel, creativity, and time spent together mattered just as much as grades. Looking back now, her daughters know she was teaching them far more than they ever realized at the time. Joanne also understood one of the hardest parts of parenting. She gave her daughters room to breathe, because she believed in them and who they were becoming… themselves. She encouraged them to become independent women, trusting them to find their own paths while making sure they never doubted she would always be standing behind them if they needed her. When Gillian once lost points on an otherwise outstanding middle school report because she hadn’t colored perfectly inside the lines of a country’s flag, Joanne wasn’t interested in debating coloring technique. The substance of the project had been excellent, and that was what mattered to her. She never hesitated to stand up for her daughters when she believed fairness mattered more than arbitrary rules. When Silver struggled through a difficult period of bullying, Joanne quietly showed up every day at lunchtime with a fresh bagel so her daughter could eat safely in the comfort of her mother’s car instead of facing another painful lunch period. She simply showed up. Her daughters each remember a home and a childhood filled with warmth, creative expression and unconditional love. The kitchen table was often covered with craft supplies, school projects, jewelry-making materials, or something new Joanne had decided everyone should learn together. After swim practice, homemade treats often waited on the counter—sponge cake, mandel bread, brownies, and other baked favorites prepared with love. Gillian remembers constantly doing art projects with her mom and frequently watching performances of The Nutcracker together. She also recalls how her mom frequently visited her while she was in college and law school, taking her out to dinner, exploring new neighborhoods, and continuing the traditions they had built years earlier. They would have dim sum and walk into vintage stores in Greenwich Village, where they somehow ran into Steven Tyler of Aerosmith more than once. Likewise, Silver remembers when Joanne took her to the Patricia Field Boutique on 8th Street in Manhattan to learn how to do her makeup and Serena Williams walked in. She also recalls how her mom would run to the movies with her to catch opening-night showings of both The Lord of the Rings and the re-released Star Wars films. Both daughters fondly remember afternoons spent baking together, and countless endeavors that became lifelong memories simply because their mother had a gift for making ordinary days feel special. And they remember the music. Many mornings began with ABBA blasting through the house—especially Dancing Queen—until two sleepy daughters finally emerged from their bedrooms begging their mother to please turn it down. She usually didn’t. Joanne also loved animals and was rarely without a cherished companion. Over the years there were both cats and dogs, most recently Scout and Coco, who brought her endless happiness. An avid swimmer at Berkshire West and the Pittsfield YMCA, she even completed the YMCA’s “Swim Across Massachusetts” challenge entirely in the pool. She loved theater, especially sharing performances with family (Hamilton and The Nutcracker were her favorites), and she would always meet her own friends for brunch and welcome her daughters’ friends into her home as guests, anytime. Becoming a grandmother brought Joanne a new kind of joy. When Dan and Gillian married, Joanne proudly told everyone she knew that she had become an “instant grandma” to an adorable four-and-a-half-year-old named AJ. Over the years she celebrated every milestone in his life—from school graduations to his acceptance into Boston University and, later, his graduation with dual degrees in psychology and business. She loved bragging about both of her grandchildren every chance she got, just as she proudly shared the accomplishments of both of her daughters with anyone willing to listen. With Jaidyn, Joanne shared another special tradition. Beginning when she was very young, summers and school vacations in the Berkshires became treasured times for grandmother and granddaughter. Sometimes for a week, sometimes longer, it would simply be Grandma, Grandpa, and Jaidyn at “Camp Grandma.” There were French toast breakfasts with Joanne’s unmistakable hint of vanilla, afternoons making crafts and scrapbooks around the kitchen table, trips to Mass MoCA, Hancock Shaker Village, and The Mount, walks with Scout and later Coco, and countless quiet moments that became some of the defining memories of Jaidyn’s childhood. Joanne looked forward to those visits every bit as much as Jaidyn did. During Joanne’s illness, she was heartbroken to miss attending AJ’s college graduation and Jaidyn’s Bat Mitzvah in person—two grandchild milestones she had so eagerly anticipated. Even then, her thoughts remained fixed on the people she loved most. As adults, Gillian and Silver built lives reflecting different passions, but both carried their mother’s influence with them. Gillian graduated from MIT with a degree in mathematics before becoming an accomplished attorney. Joanne never stopped marveling at her daughter’s achievements and loved telling people about the remarkable woman she had become, especially the devoted mother she had become. She was always sharing stories of Gillian and Jaidyn. Silver graduated from Brandeis University before becoming an accomplished attorney as well. Outside of work, she developed an impressive passion for Ironman triathlons, traveling the world to compete. Joanne followed every race from start to finish, eagerly tracking her daughter’s progress and celebrating every finish line. Vacation photographs, race updates, and post-race phone calls became their own language of love and a part of their story together. When Joanne passed away while Silver was in Spain preparing for a race, that finish line became something entirely different. Silver crossed it not for a personal record, but for her mother—the woman who had celebrated every finish before. That was the kind of love Joanne gave. She celebrated every accomplishment, every adventure, and every joy as though it were her own. She taught her daughters to be independent, but never alone. She taught them that experiences matter. That family comes first. That creativity is worth nurturing. That showing up matters. That love is something you do. Joanne measured life not by accolades or possessions, but by memories made, traditions shared, and time spent together. She filled her family’s lives with music, imagination, encouragement, adventure, homemade treats, and unwavering love. And she found genuine joy in watching the people she loved become exactly who they were meant to be. The remarkable family she leaves behind is the greatest reflection of the remarkable woman she was. And somewhere, whenever ABBA’s Dancing Queen begins to play, her family will smile, picture Joanne turning the volume up just a little too loud, and remember the woman who spent a lifetime making sure the people she loved had a lifetime of memories. In the days following Joanne’s passing, her husband, children, and grandchildren gathered together in Lenox to remember their “Dancing Queen” and to reflect on the truly remarkable woman she was and the equally remarkable life she lived.
