Mrs. Mary E. Ferris

Mary E. Ferris, 96, of Pittsfield, Ma., passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 4, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Pittsfield, October 4, 1927, to Richard and Julia Tierney Maloy, Mary attended Osceola School, followed by St. Joseph High School, graduating in 1945. She received her BA in 1949 from Our Lady of the Elms College, where she majored in English, with a minor in Spanish. Mary continued her education, at North Adams State Teacher’s College (MCLA), graduating in 1952 with her Master’s in Education. On August 23, 1952, after the completion of her degree, Mary married Clement A. Ferris, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church. While Clem was finishing his last year of law school, Mary taught school in Ashby & Rosindale, also substitute teaching in the Boston school district. In 1953, Mary and Clem returned to Pittsfield, to raise their five children. Mary’s family was of utmost importance to her, and she loved every moment spent by their side. Friends also held a special place in her heart, most recently the Wednesday lunch crew! Mary was an avid sports fan and followed the Boston Celtics and Boston Red Sox. She also enjoyed skiing, swimming, and playing golf at Berkshire Hills Country Club. Mary loved vacations on Cape Cod, winters in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, concerts at Tanglewood, in Lenox, as well as travel with her children. Among other things, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, painting in oil and watercolor, as well as singing and tap dancing. Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband of 60 years, the Honorable Clement A. Ferris, on April 16, 2012 and by her son, John J. Ferris, on December 30, 1982. She is survived by her four children Mary, Kathleen, Clem, his wife Martha, and Annie Ferris, as well as 6 grandchildren, Patrick Clark, Laura Clark, her fiancé Steve Unwin, Christopher Clark, Katherine Ferris, her fiancé Billy Boos, Clem Ferris, his fiancé Rachel Godwin, and Ashanti Ferris. Mary was also blessed with 2 great grandchildren, Kyran Clark and Brynn Boos. Funeral Notice: Funeral services for Mary E. Ferris will be Saturday, April 13th, 2024 with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:30am at St. Charles Catholic Church, where she was a longtime and faithful communicant. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday, April 12, 2024 from 4pm to 6pm at the Dwyer Funeral Home, 776 North Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory can be made to Boys and Girls Club of the Berkshires.
